Desperate economical times for ‘Desperate Housewives’, too

February 20, 2009 by Amy Bartner

Marc Cherry has been asked to cut $1 million from the ‘wives budget, reports E!’s Ted Casablanca. So that means, although Nicollette’s departure from the show has definitely been confirmed, she won’t be the only one. As for now, it’ll only be “guest stars” leaving, Ted said.

Who do you think will be desperately searchin’ for a new job? Better yet, who do you think should be desperately searchin’ for a new job?

These are my guesses: No more Lily Tomlin as one half of the Old-Lady P.I.s (though they best not be getting rid of Mrs. McCluskey…). I think we already knew this one, but this probably means Jackson/Gale Harold is gone for good. Who else? Katherine? A lass can hope, can’t she?

I would’ve bet my bottom dollar you would have said “Susan”…

I don’t want Katherine to die! I’ve grown attached to her. Maybe fewer episodes for her, but I want her to fight back like a tiger when Dave comes after her.

  2. Arianna says:

I want to see Gale Harold’s return. I know I’m not alone in this. He is a witness with regard to Dave’s whereabouts on the night of the fire. So there should be something there for him aside from being Susan’s lover.

  3. Nel says:

Honestly? I don’t want Gale Harold back on DH. I would love to see him getting some serious role that would be worth his acting skills. He’s extremely underused as Jackson.

  4. DM says:

If Gale goes, I go too… and so will most of his fans.

  5. kathy Day says:

I want Susan to go. She doesn’t seem to add anything positive to the group. She’s always feeling sorry for herself or misjudging or jumping to a wrong conclusion. I vote her off.

  6. Jaz says:

Kathy Day- Is that your real name? Cuz its the same name as the mom from Kath & Kim.
Anyways I’d have to agree with you, I wouldn’t miss Susan. The only time I ever liked her on the show was season 1 when she was with Mike and Julie was on the show. I always like the couple “Musan” but I don’t like Susan alone. I’m still rooting for them to get back together though…

  7. kathy says:

Actually you’re right.. with her daughter Susan was at least tolerable, even though Julie seemed more mature than she was. I guess she’s supposed to play the flighty one, but she’s getting tiresome.

  8. kathy says:

And yes, that’s my real name. And my friends call me Kath… although I’ve never seen the show. Should I?

  9. Jaz says:

Well I initially only watched it because I like pretty much everything Molly Shannon does and I knew I would like it. I think its a good show. Molly Shannon and Selma Blaire are a funny mother-daughter pair.

  10. ducdebrabant says:

I think they’d be crazy not to bring Gale Harold back and take advantage of the publicity surrounding his accident. It will be a big event whatever he does next. I agree about Tomlin. There’s no need to put a star in every little guest part.

In regard to Jackson being a witness to the Doctor being killed, he will also be important to helping make Susan and new life. Also, Dave will have to go soon, after all he is the bad guy, so that means they will need another Male figuar on the sceen. I would love to see Gale Harold with a show of his own, but that will come soon enough, for now he has a great spot on DH (hopefully) and is getting great exposure.

His short time on Vanished gave him alot of new fans, and so will DH.

  12. BAP says:

I hope Gale returns also next season. But have some of you fans noticed that Desperate Housewives is starting to lose a whole lot of viewers now and they are also getting rid of Edie Nicollette Sheridans character another bad idea. They better not hope they get cancelled after season 6 Im just saying they were almost cancelled before the season 4 and 5.

  13. joannkristina says:

BAP, thanks for your response. My feelings on the viewership going down, is because Gale brought all new fans to the show, and now that he is no longer on, they have moved away. If Marc Cherry and the other powers that be are thinking of bringing Gale Harold back, they should let the cat out of the bag, and we will be ringing the doorbells on Westiera lane once again.

Unless they are thinking of a new show for Gale, and if they are. PLEASE GIVE US HIS NEW ADDRESS REAL QUICK.

I want Gale Harold back! I miss seeing him weekly, and he’s the only reason I started watching Desperate Housewives. If he goes, I go.

  15. epcure88 says:

Gale Harold is essential to DH’s success. The show has lost steam since his departure. The stories are flat and lack luster and border on idiocy. I’d also like them to use the gay couple as being more key players in the show. They always bring a laugh and add spice to an ever drab show.

  16. Barbara2001 says:

Marc Cherry announced at the time of this season that he did the 5 year jump in time to bring a freshness to the show.
Gale Harold was the freshest thing to hit, an extraordinary actor who it seems from all of the boards has a great number of fans including the new ones who have watched the show and are glad for his presence.
It would be a mistake to let him go.

  17. friskyfilly says:

I miss Gale Harold. I want him either back on DH or on his own show. I know the role of Jackson does not take full advantage of his talents so if he returns I would hope TPTB would wise up and use his fine nuanced acting abilities. Or give him a show of his own that does. Just bring him back!

  18. Jackie says:

I, too, would love to see Gale Harold back on the show as long as he’s well enough to be back. I have my fingers crossed!

  19. Jamie says:

Wow. So many comments! Gale Howard was a great character, indeed. We’ll see what happens there. We all know Marc Cherry is always full of surprises. :)

Let me address one thing about Desperate Housewives and the show’s viewership.

Yes, it is down, but there is good reason for this. You have to remember that there are more and more channels on (it seems, everyday). Many shows have such a small (but faithful) viewership that they don’t even manage to make it to the Nielsen ratings list. Desperate Housewives is still in the top 10 as far as network shows go — so there is little to no danger of any cancellation in the near future.

I read a lot of posts about “if [this person/that person] leaves, I’m not watching anymore”. People come and go, for whatever reason. I know that casting cuts for guest stars have been cut, but there were a LOT of guests on the show. I’m sure there is room for Jackson to come back. As far as a “guest star” goes, it could be anyone. Anyone who utters more than three full lines in Hollywood garners billing on the program, and earns “guest star” status. This could be a hypothetical someone in a grocery store with a rumor about Gaby, a customer being catered for by Bree, or as we’ve already seen in the 100th episode, someone like Eli Stone. That, and big actors make big money. Lesser-known actors make, well — less. With Edie leaving the show, Gale Howard fans might be in for a good surprise — so stay tuned just in case.

As for the show and whomever comes and goes — I’m stuck with it until the end.

This is not a blast to any of you who like Gale Howard, by the way. He is a terrific actor and was a great asset to the show. Maybe he will be again. Like I said — with Marc Cherry and those wacky writers, you never know! :)

  20. Diana says:

For me I’m not big on watching tv.It has to something that is really good or have an actor I really respect Gale Harold is one of those actors i respect. As for the show I don’t think I would watch it without him. There are some things that are okay. So I would like for Gale to return to finish the storyline.

  21. Ine says:

    @Jamie: Seriously…

    Gale HAROLD. H-A-R-O-L-D.

    ——–

I’d love to see him back :)

  22. LynnMLIS says:

Gale Harold brought a fresh comedic touch along with some nice romantic moments to Desperate Housewives. He also delivered a number of new viewers. I am one of them. I think he should definitely stay! He a talented actor who will have his own show eventually.

  23. Jamie says:

OMG! Did I say Gale Howard? I sure did.

That’ll teach me to knock back martinis while writing.

    ;-)

  24. chicago frank says:

why not get rid of joosten?
    nobody’ll miss her.
