Can’t make the Emmys this year? You can still see the styles that make your favorite shows sizzle at a special exhibition at the FIDM Museum in downtown Los Angeles. Costumes from Emmy-nominated TV programs like “Ugly Betty,” Desperate Housewives,” “Entourage” and “24” will be on display through Sept. 29.
Nominated costume designers for the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences 2007 Emmy Awards can be seen at the Fashion museum, from costume dramas to TV series. They include Eduardo Castro for his work on “Ugly Betty,” which got 11 nominations, Andrea Galer’s costumes for “Jane Eyre” (9 noms), April Ferry with the show “Rome” (7 noms), Catherine Adair’s styles from “Desperate Housewives” (6 noms) and Joan Bergin with the show “The Tudors” with 4 noms.
Yet that’s not all that the shows that make an impact on viewers, according to costume designer and curator Mary Rose. She helped choose five additional programs up for Emmy Awards outside the costume design category that showed sartorial style, from the earthy “My Name is Earl” to the Armani for lunch bunch on “Entourage.” Other series highlighted include “Brothers and Sisters” and “Friday Night Lights.”
Rose, also an ATAS governor, says that designs seen television have a special significance to fans. “They have a personal relationship with the characters. I wanted this year’s exhibit to really feel like it was a part of their lives. That’s why the theme is ensemble shows.”
The three awards for Best Costume Design in Drama and Comedy Series, Variety show, and Movie or mini-series will be presented at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards on Saturday, Sept. 8th at the Shrine Auditorium downtown Los Angeles.
The 59th Primetime Emmy Awards, also at the Shrine will be aired live on FOX, Sunday,September 16th.
The Television Academy started to recognize excellence in costume design as a category 37years ago. The first winner was Bob Mackie, who styled “Diana Ross and The Supremes and The Temptations.” That was back in 1970, the year that “Marcus Welby, M.D.” took home the best drama series statuette.
Other vintage shows are celebrated at the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising Museum & Galleries, in Los Angeles, from 1964 to present including pop favorites like “Charlie’s Angels” and “Fantasy Island.”
