Medium and Desperate Housewives Don’t call 911 Theme
When I watched Medium and Desperate Housewives last week I noticed the don’t call 911 similarity, but didn’t think to write about it. Sarah Gilbert of tvsquad did though:
“Last week, two shows I cover, on different networks, had eerily similar scenes where a trusted partner sat by the side of a dying person who believed that 911 had been called. In Desperate Housewives, Bree Van de Camp is justified in lying to George after he takes a bottle of sleeping pills. He’s sure she’ll save his life, but she has just learned that George poisoned her husband. He deserves what he gets.
Even more eery and less deserving is the ghostess with the mostest on Medium last week. After she shoots herself in an act of desperation to stop the (literally) haunting memory of the girl her husband hit and killed while driving drunk, her husband stays by her side, holding her hand, for 27 minutes until she dies and he can safely call 911. He doesn’t want to get caught for the girls’ murder, even if it means killing his own wife.
When a strikingly similar scene appears within the same week on different networks, I always wonder if the writers for the shows are sleeping with one another. I can’t talk about my script, honey, one says after they both watch an old Hitchcock movie on late-night TV…”
